Often, I am asked if you need a DSLR camera in order to have a successful blog with beautiful images. The recipe to create a beautiful photo is much more complicated than the type of camera you use. While a DSLR can provide you with a lot of flexibility in the look of photos that you create, it is also a huge investment for your business.
For the first five months that I was blogging, I relied primarily on my phone to take photos. I, quite frankly, didn’t have it in my budget to invest in a DSLR camera. Then, last October, all of my camera equipment was stolen. I was at a total loss: how would my business survive without my Nikon?? But the reality is, it did. I used my IPhone and a point and shoot (I photographed my entire trip to London on a $200 six-year-old camera!) and I sincerely love how the photos turned out:
The bottom line is, you don’t need incredible camera equipment to have a blog. If you want to be/are a full time blogger, I suggest eventually buying a DSLR. However, a DSLR camera is pretty much pointless if you are shooting on auto and are not making smart decisions on what lenses to use. A DSLR may take higher quality photos than your phone but, when viewed on a website, the quality is often much less important than the composition and lighting. For example, the photo in this post is an IPhone photo and I LOVE it!
The bottom line is this: a DSLR camera is not going to magically transform your photography. It can give you a lot more flexibility in the type of images you produce and, if you are knowledgable in how to use it, can lead to beautiful results but, a lot of the time your IPhone can get the job done.
