Personally, I love creating IGTVs for my wedding photography business and I’ve gotten quite a few questions on how I create them and the gear I use. In this post, I’ll be sharing the gear you need to make professional IGTV videos, and exactly what you need to get started. You may just be surprised at how many of these things you already have, or can buy quite inexpensively!
First, A Camera and Tripod
Believe it or not, you probably already have what you need. In fact, it’s probably sitting in your pocket (or you are reading this post on it)! Your cell phone! Yep, if you are wanting to jump into making IGTVs, using your cell phone is a great place to start. Especially nowadays, phone cameras are getting better and better and they really can record great video. I use a phone tripod, similar to this one, that works really well for recording IGTV videos:
You can also use your DSLR or other cameras for this as well. Just make sure you have the appropriate tripod you need, and that you record your video vertically (or with enough space horizontally to crop for IGTV).
Good Lighting is Important
If you have a space where you can rely on filming with nice, even natural light (and only plan on filming when it is light outside), I envy you. HAHA. But truly, in that case you don’t necessarily need to purchase any external lights. However, if you are like me and live in a dark apartment and tend to film when it is dark outside, you will definitely want to invest in some lighting equipment.
Personally I use this ring light, and love it! It is what I use in almost all of my IGTV videos (like the one below!). I love that I can adjust the brightness, and it creates a very beautiful and even light!
Clear Audio Makes or Breaks Your Video
The audio can really make or break the experience for your viewers! Don’t underestimate the power of a good microphone. Personally, I just invested in great professional microphone for my DSLR and it has made a world of a difference in my audio quality. Another option is a lavalier microphone.
After Recording Your Video
After you have filmed the footage for your IGTV video, it is time to edit. I am planning a post all about editing IGTVs in the different editing software (and how to do it!) that will go up later this month, so if you have specific questions reach out at email@example.com and I’ll try to get it answered in that post!
I typically recommend iMovie to beginners (if they have a mac) since it is free and very user-friendly. However, as you grow your editing skills, you will likely outgrow iMovie and so I recommend Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro. You will have more flexibility and freedom as to what you can create!
To create graphics such as title sceeens, I highly recommend Canva. They even have cute animations that you can use to add fun elements to your videos.
Lastly, I highly recommend that you caption every video you create for IGTV. First, this is an accessibility best practice and something we should all strive for. Second, many people scrolling through Instagram don’t have their headphones on and they are in a place where they can’t turn on the audio. Therefore, they skip your video if you don’t have captions! You don’t want your followers to skip your content for something you can easily add! Fortunately, there are ways to automate this process as adding captions can be arduous. I use an app called MixCaptions. For a small cost, they will automate my captions for me. Then it usually takes 5 minutes to go through and correct any mistakes and add in proper grammar.
I hope that this post was helpful in letting you get the inside scope on exactly what I use to create my IGTV videos! With a camera, tripod, good lighting and audio, and a great editing job, you are well on your way to grow your audience and reach through IGTV!
